A commercial artist, painter and film-maker, Nitish studied at the Government College of Art and Craft for three years. He graduated from Calcutta University and studied Tagore literature at Rabindra Bharati University. Although he was a commercial artist by profession, Nitish had worked as a director, co-director, art director and screenplay writer in many documentaries. He designed book covers and illustrations for thousands of publications. Nitish received his grounding in documentary films from his brother, Ashis Mukherjee. For Abanindranath O Tar Kathashilpa, Nitish drew hundreds of black and white drawings for this film. This brought a speedy animation effect though the documentary was not animated at all. "In contrast, Kamala Nehru, directed by my brother, had all my paintings were in colour. They were shot on animation camera. But, it was not an animation film. In my first feature film, I drew directly on the picture negative that was at least 350 ft. long to create a speedy visual effect. Most of the master directors assumed that the effect was made by animation," he said. Nitish has penned several books including Rabindranath, Raktokarabi & Raktokarabir Rong, Sonar Pakhi Tumi Kothaye and Chalachchitrer Chitrakar. A member of Shilpa Bhavna, Nitish is the founder member of Forum for Better Cinema and the former joint secretary of Cine Directors' Guild of Eastern India.
