Born in Pabna, he completed his graduation from Calcutta University. Subsequently, Utpalendu specialized in modern history. Utpalendu was involved with student politics that has affiliated with CPI(ML). For a brief period of time, Utpalendu also taught in some schools for adivasi children in the border areas of Bengal, Bihar and Odisha. However, he shifted back to Kolkata for health reasons and began teaching in a higher secondary school.     This documentary was based on his work among the tribals as a non-formal teacher during 1967 to 1971. The documentary was a protest against those who were locked in jails for political reasons without any trial.

Did You Know?

During his student days, Utpalendu took to writing and was also involved with the publication of a little magazine. Swarna Mitra was his pen name when he wrote short stories. He published an anthology of short stories by the name of Palash.
