Shashi Anand has a graduation in cinematography from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). He has been actively involved in the documentary movement. His first documentary - Man Vs. Man - on the hand rickshaw-pullers of Kolkata was recognized internationally too. Abar Koto Din was his second documentary. It was in the Indian panorama in 1990. Shashi has also done the cinematography in many movies, including Mrinal Sen's City Part 2 of Calcutta, My Eldorado (1990), Mahaprithibi (1992), Antareen (1994) and Antyeshti (1990).
