Not much is spoken about how Rajen Tarafdar started making documentary films. The veteran director of Ganga and Palanka has made four documentaries in his career. According to son Gora Tarafdar, these were made sometime during the early 60s. In all probability, Rajen took up this assignment before he started directing Agnisikha (1962) and Jiban Kahini (1964).During those days, there was a trend of showing a documentary before the screening of a feature film at a theatre. The director had formed a collective along with three of his industry colleagues. That included actor Parijat Bose, editor Aribinda Bhattacharya ...
The sole purpose of agreeing to make these documentaries was to use the money earned for making Jiban Kahini. While hazarding a guess, Gora Tarafdar said that the state government perhaps offered Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 to the collective for making each film.
