The son of Hari S Dasgupta, Raja is an alumnus of Calcutta Boys' School and Delhi University. From 1976 to 1982, he worked as a cinematographer and an associate director of his father in all his documentaries. Raja was also an advertising professional from 1979 till 1985. First, he worked with Hindustan Thompson Associates (HTA) and then, Response. During his advertising career, Raja used to supervise commercials made for ITC, Brooke Bond, Dunlop and GD Pharmaceuticals. Awards
    • A Song for Birsa won the Bengal Film Journalists' Association Award for Best Documentary in 1979 and was screened at Germany's Mannheim Film Festival in 1980.
Did You Know?

When Raja's son was born just after he had made A Song for Birsa, Harisadhan suggested that he be named after the tribal leader.
