Born in Howrah district, Purnendu passed the entrance examination from his village school and moved to Kolkata in 1949 where he was admitted to The Indian College Of Arts And Draftsmanship. However, he never completed his course and devoted his time to the practice of arts. By end '50s, he was a known poet, illustrator and a cover designer. In 1957, he received the Manik Memorial Award. In 1965, he started directing his first feature film. It was based on Premendra Mitra's Telenapota Avishkar. The film, Swapna Niye, was released in 1966.
