Born in Kolkata, Niranjan Pal was the son of nationalist Bipin Chandra Pal. He was briefly involved in India's freedom struggle. Subsequently, he was sent to London. During those days, he also wrote plays (The Light of Asia and Shiraz) that were staged in London too. They drew the attention of German film-maker Franz Osten who made their cinematic adaptations. After moving to India where he worked as a screenplay writer of Bombay Talkies, he also started directing his own feature films.Apart from doing features, Niranjan also dabbled in documentaries.
