Nabyendu started his career as an actor in 1962 but soon turned towards direction. He made his directorial debut with an experimental Hindi film, Naya Rasta, in 1967. While directing documentaries and features, Nabyendu experimented with both content and form. While Glimpses of Bengal Terracotta covered all the terracotta temples of the state, Nabyendu also directed a docu-feature on Birsa Munda titled Muktijuddhe Adibashi that was produced by the Bengal government. His Bleeding in the Sun was in the Indian Panorama in 1997. He died at the age of 71 after a massive heart attack at his residence in 2009.

    • The Bleeding in the Sun won the Best Director and Best Documentary award in 1997 from the Bengal Film Journalists' Association (BFJA).

The text for Glimpses of Bengal Terracotta was penned by Chintamani Kar. Nabyendu was impressed by Sreelekha Mukherji's studies in dhrupad. She used dhrupad elements for the music of the documentary. Sreelekha had got Pt Tejendra Narayan Majumdar to play the sarod for the documentary's music.
