Born in Bangladesh's Tangail, famous playwright Manmatha Ray pursued his early education in Mymensingh. Later, he completed his MA and also got a degree in law from Calcutta University. Manmatha wrote his first play in 1923 titled Muktir Daak. At least 17 of his plays were cinematically adapted. He was assigned to make a documentary on Kazi Nazrul Islam by the government of West Bengal in 1957. Manmatha was then working in the state government's publicity department.
The shooting team followed Nazrul when he, along with Pramila, was taken to his ancestral house in Churulia by the Nazrul Sanskritik Samiti with the hope of jogging his memories. Nazrul was put up in a school and taken to his ancestral house. His childhood friends came to meet him with the hope that he would recognize them. But all efforts went in vain. The documentary ended with the prayer that the poet would regain his memory some day.
