An alumnus of Hindu School, Debasish was the Hirendranath Dutta gold medal recipient of Jadavpur University's comparative literature department. His professional life began as a lecturer of English before he joined the news department of the Ananda Bazar Patrika. Subsequently, he served as the editor of Anandamela. A poet of repute and a translator, he has also published novels, stories and essays. He has also translated many works of Chinua Achebe and Isaac Asimov. Documentaries have interested him too. His filmography includes three documentaries - A Doll's House, Calcutta Zero Mile, Children of Umang Lal.

Did You Know?

With a keen interest in history, art, culture and sociology, Debasish also built an archive of rare books and archaeological artifacts. His son, Bappaditya Bandopadhyay, was a film-maker.
