Beforetaking to feature film-making and directing the National Award-winning Shodh, BiplabRoy Chowdhury had made a couple of documentaries. During the 60s, he had left his medical studies to join the industry as a film editor. His first documentary was titled Latent. Produced by Film-O-Pub, this was a silent film about a homeless boy who lived in the alleyways of Kolkata and eked out a living on the streets. Biplab also directed two other documentaries titled Tribals of Singbhum and The Whispering Wind.

Awards
    • Latent had received the Best Film on social documentation at the 18th National Film Awards for the best of Indian cinema in 1970.
