Born in Kolkata and an alumnus of Vidyasagar College, Barin wanted to study abroad and had applied in different courses. Finally, he had enrolled at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinematographiques in France and studied direction and editing there. Thereafter, he studied cinematography in Rome's Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografi. As a film school student, he had seen the likes of Jean Renoir and Vittorio De Sica drop by. Did You Know?

Both Barin Saha and Ritwik Ghatak were friends. While Ghatak made a documentary on the adivasis of Bihar, Barin Shah focused on those living in the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha border. Both these documentaries showed the real lives of the tribes that were earthy and rooted. In a book dedicated to Badal Sircar called Chalachchitrakshar, the theatre personality had praised The Chenchus and had also shared that it was not well-circulated. The reason for this could be a sense of fear of it maligning India's image since it had shots of slaughter and rodent-eating.
