He made Viva Mandela during Nelson Mandela's visit to Kolkata in October 1990. That was shortly after Mandela's release from prison after 27 years. The film recorded his first-ever visit to India where tens of thousands had gathered at Eden Gardens for Mandela's public reception. In this 13-minute-long film, clips of Mandela's anti-apartheid speech were juxtaposed with footage of the torture of people of colour in South Africa. The film was edited by Sudipto Bhowmick. Abhijit Banerjee, Prabir Roy and Debabrata Batabyal had done the camerawork for it. Amar-Sabyasachi's shadowgraph was used in the film too.
