Santi P Chowdhury was a major independent documentary film-maker. He studied first at the Presidency College and then went to Glasgow University. He was actively involved in the British film society movement. In between, he worked with Satyajit Ray from 1955 to 57. He had founded the Little Cinema film unit in Kolkata in 1958 which made over 100 shorts independent of government support. Among his early documentaries, To Light a Candle and Entertainers of Rajasthan stand out for the attention to detail and ability to portray still life properly.
