In an illustrious career spanning 38 years, Satyajit Ray directed five documentaries alongside his 28 full-length feature films. The most talked-about documentary is the one he made on Sikkim. Soumendu Ray's camera had captured the picturesque beauty of the Himalayan state with great care. However, the first cut of the film did not go down well with the then king Palden Thondup Namgyal. Satyajit is the only director in Bengal to have made a documentary on his father. To compensate for the lack of archival footage in the Sukumar Ray documentary, Satyajit had recreated parts of his father's play titled Lakshmaner Shaktishel. Soumitra played the lead here. It also had Utpal Dutt, Santosh Dutta, Chiranjeet Chakraborty in the cast. Satyajit had also cast thespian Utpal Dutt to play the Sanskrit teacher in the enactment of Sukumar's play Jhala Pala.
