Rituparno Ghosh was not a practicing documentary film-maker. In his career spanning almost two decades, he made only one 76 minute documentary that he directed. Titled Jeevan Smriti, it was based on Rabindranath Tagore. The acclaimed director, actor, writer and lyricist began his professional life after pursuing a degree in economics from Jadavpur University. He started his career as a creative artist in an advertising agency. In 1992, he made a feature film debut with Hirer Angti. In 1994, his Unishe April released which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film.
Samadarshi Dutta has played the role of a young Rabindranath. Rituparno zeroed in on National Award winning-director Sanjay Nag to play Tagore in his mellowed years. Raima Sen played the role of Kadambari Debi. The narration was done by the likes of Anjan Dutt, Deepti Naval, Jagannath Guha, Anusuya Majumder, Joy Goswami and Rituparno Ghosh himself.
