Documentaries have always been a favourite medium for Sen. His first outing in this space was when he directed a five-part series titled Itihaaser Kolkata in 1990 which focused on various aspects of the city. The series was presented by Doordarshan. For Delhi Doordarshan, he made a similar five-part series on the tribals of Bengal. The camera focused on their rituals and medicines. Another important documentary from the early years of his film-making career was titled Sri Ramkrishna O Shyampukur (1991).It was in 1992 that the documentary space truly opened up for Raja. Awards
    • Suchitra Mitra won the 40th National Award for the Best Arts/Cultural Film of 1992. 
    • In 2005, his Aalkaap won the Best Documentary award from Bengal Film Journalists' Association (BFJA).
Did You Know?

One of his most interesting works of was a documentary on a magazine titled Rabibasar. The magazine had a rich literary history with Tagore helming it first. Meetings for the magazine were held at Saratchandra Chattopadhyay's residence too. Nabaneeta Dev Sen was its president when Sen started work on this documentary.
