An alumnus of film editing from the Film and Television Institute of India, Amitabh directed his debut feature film in 1989 titled Kaal Abhirati. Amitabh won the special jury award at the 37th National Awards for "for having had the courage of his convictions in making this experimental film which sets out to explore new horizons in the realm of film making". During the intolerance row in 2015, Amitabh was among the 24 personalities to return his National Award. Thereafter, he turned his attention to making documentaries.
