An alumnus of film editing from the Film and Television Institute of India, Amitabh directed his debut feature film in 1989 titled Kaal Abhirati. Amitabh won the special jury award at the 37th National Awards for "for having had the courage of his convictions in making this experimental film which sets out to explore new horizons in the realm of film making". During the intolerance row in 2015, Amitabh was among the 24 personalities to return his National Award. Thereafter, he turned his attention to making documentaries. Awards
    • Bishar Blues premiered at the International Film Festival of Amsterdam, was screened across various other national and international film festivals including at IFFI, Munich and the Yamagata Film festival in Japan. It also won three National Awards- Best Film, Best Editing for Chakraborty and Best Sound Design.
Did You Know?

Amitabh and his team also screened Bishar Blues through a travelling film projector across the villages of Bengal where the film had been shot.
