After graduating from Scottish Church College, Nilotpal Majumdar did a postgraduate diploma in cinema with specialization in editing from Film & Television Institute of India. He has worked as the head of the department of editing at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute and also served the institute as its dean. He was also the director of the Manipur State Film and Television Institute in Imphal.Nilotpal has been a jury member at the prestigious International Documentary Film Festival (IDFA) in 2017. Awards
    • Dhatujhar '96 won a Special Jury Prize at the 44th National Awards in 1997. Nilotpal directed, produced and did its cinematography. The Special Jury Award was given to him "for his bold and experimental exploration of the dilemma between discovery and destruction".
    • He has been awarded the 2017 EDN Award from the European Documentary Network (EDN). The award recognizes his contribution to documentary culture.

Nilotpal is the founder of the DocedgeKolkata, Asian Forum for Documentary programme. He created a unique platform for co-production and training in the Asia-Pacific region, including a pitching forum that attracts documentary talents, financiers and sales agents from all across the globe. This is an annual international documentary incubation-cum-pitching forum for Indian and Asian filmmakers. The forum focuses on intensive development of creative storytelling skills and creation of co-production opportunities. It has been designed to support innovative documentary projects to unleash creative and co-production possibilities. The forum identifies new talents and experienced filmmakers to support original ideas realized through cross-border collaborations. The immersive mentoring sessions include Narrative and Visual labs to develop projects. The Lab is followed by pitch preparation, presentation of projects and one-on-one individual meetings with industry partners, possible collaborators and market leaders including broadcasters, producers and distributors.
