Alongside his acclaimed feature films, Goutam Ghose has also directed documentaries on a wide range of subjects. That includes the creative genius of shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan, the versatile artist KG Subramanyan, German Nobel laureate Gunter Grass and painter Shuvaprasanna, thespian Utpal Dutt, spiritual leader Dalai Lama, picturesque sand dunes of Rajasthan and the adventurous expedition along the Silk Route. Most of his documentaries were shot by Goutam himself. He also scored the music for some of them.

Awards
    • Hungry Autumn won the grand prix at the Oberhausen Film Festival in 1978.
    • The Land of Sand Dunes won the National Award for Best Documentary Film in 1986.
    • Beyond the Himalayas won the Filmfare award for Best Documentary in 1997.
Did You Know?

Meeting of a Milestone has a special screening at Cannes. Impermanence premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2004. For this documentary, Goutam was given special permission by the Chinese government to shoot in the interiors of the Potala Palace, the ancient seat of Dalai Lamas, the Jokang monastery at Lhasa and locations in Tibet.
