Chidananda was a noted film critic, author and historian. Along with Satyajit Ray and Hari Sadhan Dasgupta, he founded the Calcutta Film Society in 1947. A college lecturer who switched to advertising, Chidananda directed seven films. Apart from feature films like Amodini and Bilet Pherot, the rest were all documentaries including Portrait of a City (1961), The Dance of Shiva (1968) and Mrinal Sen Revisited (2001).
