An anthropological ethnographic film-maker, Bappa Ray has a keen interest in tribes and tribal development and has been documenting the lives and lifestyles of people in the rural, tribal and forest areas for the past four decades. He has closely worked with the Anthropological Survey of India, Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH),  Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), National Literacy Mission, Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of External Affairs. Awards
    • Wangala - A Garo Festival won the Best Anthropological/Ethnographic Film at the 40th National Awards in 1993. As producer and director, he won two Silver Lotuses (Rajat Kamals) for "presenting the life of lifestyle of Garo community of Meghalaya".
    • His Ladakh - Life Along the Indus won the Best Anthropological/ Ethnographic Film at the 41st National Award in 1994. As producer and director, Bappa won two Silver Lotuses (Rajat Kamals) "for a visually enchanting depiction of the life patterns of the people living along the river Indus in Ladakh, with rich details emerging from their environment".
    • His The Morung - Silent Witness Of The Brave Wancho won the Best Anthropological/ Ethnographic Film at the 42nd National Award in 1995. Bappa won a Silver Lotus (Rajat Kamal) for "detailed and painstaking yet engaging documentation of The Wancho Tribe of Arunachal Pradesh".
    • Pashmina Royale won the Best Promotional Film at the 48th National Awards in 2001. As a producer and director, he won two Silver Lotuses (Rajat Kamals) for "creatively tracing the history of Pashmina shawl and aesthetically portraying the designs and styles of this ancient Kashmiri art, which has now been revived".

Did You Know?

As a result of Buddhist Chantings of Ladakh and dossier, Buddhist chantings were later selected by UNESCO in 2012 for preservation as Intangible Heritage.
