An Academy member of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA), Balaka Ghosh is an alumus of Calcutta Girls' High School. She did her graduation from Lady Brabourne College. She was a student of the direction department of Dilip Roy's Institute of Film and Allied Arts. During her college days, she had already completed her first film titled 58 Shots. An experimental short fiction on different states of mind of a person, 58 Shots turned out to be a very debatable film during the early 90s. It was an entry at Dhaka's International Short Film Festival and Mumbai International Short and Documentary Festival in 1992. ...

Awards
    • Anukampan was adjudged the Best Arts/Cultural Film at the 41st National Awards for best of cinema in 1993. As a producer and director, she won two Rajat Kamals "for focussing attention on a unique intermingling of classical and folk dance traditions which is in danger of extinction through an appealing film form". 
    • The film was also adjudged the Best Documentary by the Bengal Film Journalists Association (BFJA).
