Abhijay Karlekar was interested in theatre during college, and had directed plays like Zoo Story (Albee), War (Van Itallie) and Bed Bug (Mayakovsky). After college, he was briefly in advertising as a copy writer for (Hindustan Thompson Associates) HTA, first in Kolkata and then Chennai. Did You Know?

In the mid 80s, Jojo also made a two-camera 35 mm documentary on Bokaro steel. This was on an integrated steel plant.
