Asit Sen

Director Asit Sen was born in Dhaka's Autshahi village in 1922. He spent his initial years in his grandmother's maternal house there. His grandfather was a railway pleader in Assam and young Asit moved to Nagaon with him and stayed there till his matriculation. After the World War II ended, the family shifted to Kolkata. First, they stayed in Garpar and then moved to a three-storey rented house on Deshapriya Park just behind the Jalojog sweetmeat shop. That's where Asit got married. Soon after, they moved to 68 B Russa Road East. Actor Bhanu Bandyopadhyay was a neighbour in Charu Market. Asit's son, Partha, was born in this house in 1949. Unfortunately, his wife passed away during childbirth. Asit used to stay in this house when he directed Chalachal and Deep Jwele Jai. On October 3, 1961, the Sens shifted to a two-storey house on 7K Cornfield Road that had four flats with a mezzanine floor. In 1966-67, Asit moved to Mumbai where he first stayed in a rented house Khar close to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay's house. Asit's pet name was Manik and incidentally this house was called Manik Moti. Later, he bought his own penthouse on Juhu Tara Road. He sold it off because he didn't need such a huge space and moved to a small flat on Juhu Tara Road. When he returned to Kolkata, Asit initially stayed at 7K Cornfield Road. By then, he had begun working in Bengali television and directed short television episodes called Swami Howa, Dudher Dam and Aboshor. Since he needed to work in the studios, Asit decided to take up accommodation in Tollygunje. A flat in Bansdroni was his last address before he passed away in 2001. Both the Cornfield Road house and the Bansdroni flat still exist.
