Salil Chowdhury

Born in Ghazipur village of South 24 Parganas, Salil Chowdhury's childhood was spent in the tea gardens of Assam. At the age of five, Salil shifted to Kolkata to study. He used to stay with cousin Nikhil Chowdhury who ran an orchestra band called Milan Parishad. Then, he moved in with his maternal uncle's family in the Kodalia village. During his IPTA days, he stayed in Sonarpur. His first marriage was in his 20s to Jyoti Chowdhury. The couple shifted to Mumbai during the making of Do Bigha Zameen. During those days, he used to stay in Bandra with Jyoti. In the late 50s, he met Sabita Chowdhury. The duo settled down at Mumbai's Pedder Road. Their house was named Himgiri. The music scene in Bollywood changed in the 1980s. Salil didn't like the work culture and decided to return to Kolkata. He stayed at the Akashdeep apartment on 5 Lower Rowdon Street. During that time, he also registered a flat for Sabita at the Happy Nook Society near Ruby Hospital. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1995 before the completion of the flat's construction. Sabita Chowdhury shifted to this flat in 1999.
