Paradise was established by Motilal Radhakishan and Chamuria Brothers in the mid 30s. There is a bit of a confusion regarding which film this cinema opened with. While some attribute it to College Girl, others say it was Achhut Kannya. Rabindranath Tagore had visited this theatre for the screening of Achhut Kannya in 1936. Padma Vibhushan Nellie Sengupta had dropped by on the silver jubilee of Achhut Kanya. In 1952, it was taken over by Bengal Properties run by Ramesh Kapurchand Mehta and Brajlal Mehta. The Mehtas were known for financing many Hindi production houses, including Navketan Films and RK Studios. Ramesh was based in Kolkata. He was involved in running Paradise and Roxy. After the takeover of Paradise, it was first renovated with pushback seats and air conditioning. Nirmal De's Sare Chuattor was the first Bengali film to have been screened there on February 13, 1953. But Paradise was basically meant for Hindi films. Stars would often drop by at this theatre. Raj Kapoor had visited the theatre for Sree 420 (1954) and Jagte Raho (1956). Sashi Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, BR Chopra and Yash Chopra had come down for Waqt (1965). Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore had visited it for Amar Prem (1972). Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu too had come down. It was for the release of Bairaag (1976). Dev Anand had come down thrice for Hum Dono (1961), Guide (1966) and Jewel Thief (1967). For the 25th week celebration of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), the star attraction was Aamir Khan. Subsequently, he also came for 3 Idiots (2009) and PK (2014). The last film which ran there for 25 weeks was Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. With time, the interest in watching movies at single screen waned. Paradise too suffered. Despite a renovation with an investment of approximately Rs 1.25 crore in 2007-2008, the glorious days of Paradise were partially regained. Business drastically dropped from 2014-2015. The cinema now has one auditorium with a capacity of 1,118 seats. However, the footfall at Paradise Cinema dwindled with time so much so that the hall had to be shut during the pandemic. Bengal Properties, which has taken the lease of the land for Paradise from Mohitlal Sil and still has 30 years of lease left, decided not to reopen the hall in that avatar.
