Padmasree

Address: 90 Raja SC Mullick Road, Kolkata ? 92

Status: OPEN

The hall was founded by producer-distributor Narayan Sadukhan and others sometime around 1958-59. Pramatha Kumar De, along with two other groups of partners, took over the 720-seater in 1960. They opened the cinema with Uttam Kumar-Suchitra Sen's Chaowa Pawa. Padmasree was the first single screen theatre in that entire Jadavpur, Garia, Tollygunje stretch. Bunty, Mahua, Madhaban and Malancha followed in its footsteps. Since its inception, innumerable houseful shows for Uttam Kumar's films including Sanyasi Raja, Agnishwar, Nagar Darpane and Ogo Bodhu Sundori and Anjan Choudhury's movies including Shatru, Gurudakshina, Chhotobou, Mejobou and Borobou kept the cash registers jingling. Old-timers have stories about charity shows being hosted in the morning that would be wrapped up before the regular 2-5-8 pm movie screenings began. The hall became so popular that the nearby bus stoppage started being referred to as Padmasree 'More'. Unfortunately, the cinema didn't upgrade itself with time and footfalls dwindled drastically in recent times. Padmasree closed down on April 30 2021. At that time, the cinema was screening a repeat show of Chander Pahar. The cinema reopened with Radhe in August this year. The sales were poor and it shut again for three weeks. On September 5, it reopened again with Mukhosh.
