Records state that 5 Dharamatala Street (Lenin Sarani) was originally the address of the Madan Company. It was here that Madans built the Corinthian Theatre. Plays used to be stage here regularly till the 1940s. It was christened as Central Cinema in 1942. Bidhan Chandra Roy was the chief guest of its opening ceremony. Later, the name was changed to Opera when Durgadas Saigal took over.
