Manomohan Theatre

Address: 68 Beadon Street, Kolkata - 700006

Previous Name : Star Theatre

The Star Theatre was built on Beadon Street in 1883. Later (in 1888), it was renamed and another hall came up with the name Star at Cornwallis Street (currently Bidhan Sarani). The old Star Theatre had been one of the early landmarks of commercial Bengali theatre. It took different names under different owners i.e Emerald, Kohinoor, Classic etc. From 1915 it came to be known as Manomohan Theatre. In that era, most theatres used to include other attractions in between staging productions. The old Star Theatre’s management too couldn’t sit idle. M Stephens screened a bioscope there on October 29, 1898 after a play named ‘Babu’. Miss Nelly Mountcastle’s “rainbow” and “serpentine” dances were also other attractions on the same evening. Nelson’s demise, the diamond jubilee celebrations of Queen Victoria’s reign and Gladstone’s funeral procession were also screened there. Star Theatre had published a handbill welcoming the audience to watch the “eighth wonder of the world”. Hiralal Sen’s films too were screened at Star. Not only that, it was at this old Star that he shot the scenes of Bengali dramas. The hall was known as Classic Theatre then. Hiralal shot Amarendra Nath Dutta and Kusumkumari while acting on stage there. Thus the very first journey of Bengali cinema had started from Star.Star came to be known as Manomohan Theatre after its owner Manomohan Pandey since 1915. At that time, Bengali film industry had the monopoly of the Madans. They were the primary exhibitors too. It was Manomohan Theatre that came forward to showcase films outside the Madan banner. The hall was demolished when Central Avenue came up in 1931.
