With a seating capacity of 1396, Lighthouse was one of the biggest single screens of India way back in the 1930s. Humayun Properties, the owner of New Empire, also owned Lighthouse. Dutch architect WM Dudok had designed it. Later, the theatre’s capacity was reduced to 600. Before being shut down in 2002, it was the epicentre of Hollywood movie exhibition in Kolkata’s Dharamtala area. Hindi films too were screened later on. Today, Lighthouse hosts a shopping complex.
