The cinema opened on October 27, 1951, with Shakuntala. It was previously named as Jupiter, Dipali and Chitralekha. This single screen with 720 seats was once a hub for Hindi cinema. Ram Teri Ganga Maili was screened in 1985. Amitabh Bachchan's Mard was screened in November that year. His Toofan had released in 1985. Rishi Kapoor's Bol Radha Bol in 1992 also ran for multiple weeks. Later when Bhojpuri movies started being screened, Udit Narayan had come down once for a film where he had sung.
