Previous Name : Bina Rangabhumi, Ripon Theatre, Rupali, Capital, Kirti and others
Bina Rangabhumi was established by poet-dramatist Rajkrishna Roy in the later part of 19th century (1877 or 1887) on eight bighas of land in College Street. In the course of time, various production houses took over the theatre to stage plays. The name of the theatre changed accordingly. Bina Ranghabhumi changed names to Indian Theatre, City Theatre, Victoria Opera House, Pandora Theatre, Gaity Theatre, Ripon Theatre and Tajmahal. In 1946, the name was changed to Hindusthan. That is when film screening started there. The next year, the cinema again changed names and became Capital. In 1952, it became Kirti. Jawahar was christened in 1964.
