Status: DEMOLISHED FOR MALL-MULTIPLEX SWITCHOVER
Gouranga Chandra Banik owned three cinemas in Assam. In 1967, he decided to open a cinema in Kolkata, in Lake Town. It was called Jaya Cinema. The first Bengali film to have premiered there was Jiban Mrityu. The cinema added the Mini Jaya auditorium in the late 70s. The 442-seater Mini Jaya was gutted down in the fire on July 2, 2021. Due to the state imposed restrictions, the hall was shut and there were no casualties. But everything of Mini Jaya, including the seats, screen, sound system and AC ducts, was gutted in the fire. Fortunately, the 774-seater Jaya was spared. However, Jaya didn't reopen along with others when the state government allowed cinema operations to resume with 50% occupancy. The cinema has been demolished. Work is underway for a mall-multiplex switchover.
