This cinema had opened with Padosan on March 25, 1969. Lots of films have had splendid runs at Gem. Later on, the number of seats was brought down and it was renamed as Minigem. The theatre was closed in 1998. Fire broke out in 2005. Only the structure remains today. The annual awards ceremony of the West Bengal Film Journalists' Association is held there.
