Once upon a time there used to be a cinema on Chittaranjan Avenue at the same location where now stands the Barik Bhawan. Its name was China Theatre. Films in the silent and talkie era have been screened here. Chinese films were screened there for the residents of the Chinese locality nearby. That’s how the cinema got its name. In the 1930s, this cinema used to screen English movies. During those days, it was called Baby Pearl. The interesting coincidence is that the Bariks also planned to build a cinema called Life there when they later took charge of the land. Their mansion was built with that thought in mind. However, the dreams of building a cinema there never got materialised.
