The Madans were among the firsts to build a permanent single screen in Kolkata. Elphinstone Picture Palace – the original name of Chaplin – was one of those historic single screens. Initially, films were screened here in tents. A permanent structure came up in 1912. Since the tie-up with Hollywood's RKO Pictures, it became RKO Elphinstone in 1934. Warner Brothers took over the hall in 1939 and named it Stand. After the change in ownership, this cinema was popularly known as Minerva for the longest time. The government took it over later on. It was renamed as Chaplin to commemorate the legend’s 100th birth anniversary. Now neither the cinema nor the building exists. A KMC board mentioning Chaplin Square is all that remains.
