The Star Theatre in Hatibagan was built in 1883. Initially situated in Beadon Street, the theatre later moved to Cornwallis Street (now Bidhan Sarani). The Star, along with Minerva Theatre, was one of the first institutions of commercial Bengali theatre. M Stephens got in touch with Amritlal Basu and screened a bioscope after a play titled Babu was staged there on October 29, 1898. Along with that, Nelly Mount Castle's Sarpil and Ramdhanu were also screened. Nelsoner Mrityu, the procession to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria's rule Gladstoner funeral procession were screened too. Star Theatre had come out with a handbill promoting bioscope and inviting viewers to come and witness the eighth wonder of the world by witnessing moving images of human beings on screen. Star Theatre was one of the most prominent destinations of Kolkata. Interestingly, fire breaking out in Kolkata theatres was quite common. Star Theatre had caught fire again on a Panchami night in 1991. The restored Star Theatre maintains the heritage facade while the interiors are contemporary. At present, it is primarily a cinema hall; plays are staged on about two days per month. However, during winter (December and January) plays are staged here much more frequently, of the order of ten days per month. In between, Arijit Dutta of Priya Entertainment had run the theatre on lease. Currently, the lease for running Star is with Joydeep Mukherjee. Despite the closures during the pandemic, Joydeep made sure to reopen Star as soon as the government gave the go-ahead.
