Tasweer Mahal

Address: 11, Harshee St, Raja Bazar, Kolkata, West Bengal 700009

This hall on Rajabazar crossing was inaugurated in the mid 30s. Sholay (1975) had run for 50 weeks at this theatre. Coolie (1983) had played for 30 and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) for 15 weeks in a row. Mithun Chakraborty had dropped by at the theatre when Jallaad (1995) was screened. Raja Hindustani (1996) had run houseful for two weeks straight. Shafiqul Islam Shabaz, whose grandfather had opened the hall, had done the first booking for this film. It had run for 12 weeks. Situation changed when multiplexes came up from 2005 onwards. The sales dropped drastically. To cut costs, the original staff strength came down from 40 to a meagre six. Escalating costs, dip in sale figures and lack of funds to pay staff's salary were some of the reasons to close down. December 31, 2015, was the last day of the screening.

Did You Know?

Shabaz's friends had offered to have a party at the theatre after the last screening of a Bhojpuri movie that marked the closure. But he just couldn't bring himself to agree to the proposal. The New Year's eve party had been shifted to a different venue. December 31, 2015, was the day when everyone bid the hall a teary farewell. There were just 40 people who had come for the last show. A video footage of them leaving the auditorium was shot once the movie was over.
