Dhaka resident Nagorechandra Poddar had come to Kolkata with dreams of doing business. He got lucky, made a lot of money and also built a mansion in Park Circus. Poddar was his family title. His descendants used Dey as that was their original surname. Nagorechandra had five sons - Sureshchandra, Dineshchandra, Ramapal, Asheshpal and Gobindalal. Their wives were Suramamoyi, Surabala, Jyotsnarani, Latikarani and Mayarani respectively. These five women were the main force behind the Dey family's interest in movies. First they took over the rights of Motimahal theatre on Grey Street and converted it into Bidhusree cinema. Next they built Alochaya. Subsequently, they established Bhabani on Deshpran Sashmal Road. Initially, the cinema screened a number of Hindi films. Footfalls dwindled with time and finally, this cinema resorted to screening Bhojpuri movies.
