Is making a movie enough to reach its target audience? No, certainly not. Thankfully, the importance of film publicity was not lost on our cinemawallahs. Booklets, designed as part of film publicity material, would frequently be sold in front of our cinemas. Intended to attract viewers and promote the films, they contained plot synopsis, stills, list of the cast and crew and even lyrics of songs. Some of them were so popular that various brands would place their advertisements to reach out to a huge target audience. In this section, BFA curates a selection of booklets from the 1930s to the 1970s. We start off with a dozen booklets from each decade and promise to share more from our collection in the days to come.
